Summary

Kitan Club’s March 1955 special expanded issue is a large, densely illustrated publication combining pictorial fetish culture, theoretical discussion of sexual abnormality, serialized and prize fiction, autobiographical confession, historical inquiry, and an extensive reader-community section. Its opening is strongly visual, with Japanese drawings and staged photographs of bondage, dominance, masochistic themes, wrestling, medicalized imagery, and imported erotic material. Work associated with Rudolf Hegemann and material from foreign magazines such as BIZARRE, Pigalle, and LAFF place Japanese postwar erotic culture in dialogue with international visual sources.

The main editorial body includes Naruse Ryō’s On New Developments in Perversion Research, addressing inversion, fetishism, same-sex desire, psychology, and the period’s distinctions between normal and abnormal sexuality. Naruyama Nōhei’s Drawing Bondage Pictures examines the artistic and erotic process of creating bondage imagery, while Mine Kōji’s Masochistic Boyhood traces the development of masochistic desire. Other confessional and experiential contributions examine bodily sensation, medical fantasy, sadistic desire, fetishism, and restraint.

Fiction occupies a major portion of the issue. The serialized Night Light Island appears alongside The Shadow Flower, The Tide Wave, Ten Months in Confinement, Bondage Without Rope, the substantial prize story Venus’s Heavy Stone, and An Old Tale of O-Tengumatsu: The Origin of the Tengu Nose. Historical and transnational interests also appear in the Ōtsu Incident essay, Cruel Women, Itō Seiu’s The Blood-Stained Hair Rope, Oda Nobunaga, Hero of Perversion, and Morimoto Aizō’s commentary on Hegemann’s imagery.

The later portion increasingly emphasizes documentation and community. Tsujimura Takashi discusses bondage models and photography, Numa Shōzō contributes a long installment of From a Masochist’s Notebook, and Yamada Masami reflects on decades devoted to abnormal and erotic subjects. The closing pages organize correspondence into general and specialized interest sections, followed by agency notices, media commentary, a next-issue preview, manuscript solicitations, and publication information.
