Summary

The April 1955 special expanded issue of Kitan Club is a large and unusually varied publication combining a substantial opening pictorial section with historical research, confession-contest selections, serialized fiction, memoir, translated European material, medical and sociological writing, fetish case studies, illustrated narratives, reader-oriented departments, editorial notices, and extensive back matter. Its editorial identity depends on the close placement of visual spectacle and purported investigation. Bondage photographs and fantasies appear beside historical documents, maps, medical accounts, autobiographical testimony, translation, criticism, and articles framed as research. The issue consequently presents unconventional desire not as a single genre but as a field that can be pictured, narrated, classified, historicized, confessed, and debated.

The cover depicts a woman enclosed among oversized ribbons, constricting branches, and scattered visual fragments, establishing the recurring motifs of entanglement, ornament, danger, and bodily display. Advertisements and publisher promotions follow, after which a formal printed table of contents appears within an elaborate red illustrated spread. That contents spread lists not only the conventionally paginated prose articles beginning later in the issue but also the substantive visual portfolios and illustrated features in the opening section. The opening contents must therefore be understood as editorial material rather than discarded as undifferentiated front matter.

The pictorial sequence begins with a comic and grotesque African-themed fantasy page, followed by Itō Seiu’s Finger Puppets, part of his illustrated survey of unusual spectacles. A succession of drawings then presents a gagged or restrained woman, imprisonment in a stone cell, suspension from a pillar, domestic bondage fantasy, and an illustrated preview or opening treatment of Blood-Stained Hair Rope. Other early features depict a female prisoner, a sacrificial victim, a stylized seppuku scene, a masochistic dream, and images of women bound or held captive. These pages establish an iconography of ropes, bars, suspension, bodily threat, female suffering, and theatrical punishment before the magazine turns to photography.

The opening visual sequence continues with White Slave, a multi-page illustrated captivity narrative, and then an extensive bondage photography portfolio. The photographs include gagging, rear suspension, seated and kneeling restraint, rope patterns across the torso, foot domination, outdoor capture, whipping, blindfolding, role play, and women controlling male or female partners. Several features are organized as miniature narratives rather than neutral studies. Captions suggest capture, punishment, embarrassment, attempted escape, public exposure, or submission to a commanding woman. The portfolio also includes a human-chair tableau, dog-training role play, bound nude studies, a public-park sequence, reproductions of foreign punitive imagery, and a staged fall on a staircase. These listed visual features occupy the issue’s first major editorial movement and provide concrete images for themes later explored in prose.

The numbered literary section begins with Azuma Shin’s Notes on Meiji-Period Newspapers. Drawing on historical newspaper reports, it examines crimes, scandals, punishments, unusual customs, bodily practices, and sexual behavior. The essay treats newspapers as an archive through which changing attitudes toward violence and social abnormality may be reconstructed. This historical opening establishes one of the issue’s recurring methods: sensational records are presented not merely as curiosities but as evidence for a broader investigation of desire, cruelty, and social behavior.

Gibs and Corset, a selected confession by Tokuyama Hajime, shifts from public history to private bodily experience. Orthopedic casts and corsets become sources of restriction, dependency, fixation, and erotic fantasy. Shirogane Kōji’s Yukata Sōshi then uses clothing, concealment, domestic interiors, pursuit, and vulnerability to transform an ordinary garment into the organizing object of an illustrated coercive narrative. Ōmura Mitsuko’s Stepmother Abuse presents remembered domestic punishment, while Fuwa Kazuko’s My Seppuku develops an extreme first-person fantasy of preparation, cutting, pain, and self-directed violence. Together, these pieces demonstrate the magazine’s movement among memoir, stylized confession, and fiction without maintaining rigid boundaries between them.

Ten Months in Captivity continues a prison or detention memoir centered on institutional routine, surveillance, humiliation, punishment, and relations among prisoners and authorities. Satirical illustrations complicate its documentary tone by turning portions of incarceration into grotesque social comedy. Itō Seiu’s Blood-Stained Hair Rope, Part Four, follows with historical commentary and imagery involving hair, blood, restraint, punishment, and earlier representations of cruelty. Itō’s work connects modern bondage imagery with historical records, legends, popular prints, and theatrical traditions, giving the issue’s visual interests an asserted cultural lineage.

Furuta Kichirō’s Research Presentation on Nose Torture exemplifies Kitan Club’s preference for tightly focused investigations in which a single bodily practice is examined through terminology, sensation, technique, and possible historical or erotic meaning. Karii Rei’s A Year as an Abortionist is considerably longer and more narrative. Organized into chapters and accompanied by photographs, it combines clinical procedure, professional secrecy, bodily danger, patients’ stories, and moral unease. Its confessional voice and technical details create the appearance of hidden professional testimony while also supplying the magazine with sensational medical material.

The Japanese translation of Johannes R. Birlinger’s Das Grausame Weib, translated by Morimoto Aizō as Cruel Women, expands the magazine’s engagement with European historical and sexological writing. It gathers examples of female cruelty from history, legend, punishment practices, and literature. Iwase Yōichi’s Ten Forms of Moxibustion for Women responds in a lighter, caricatural mode, connecting folk medicine, heat, exposure, and controlled pain. Numa Shōzō’s From the Notebook of a Certain Masochist then returns to sustained reflection, combining historical anecdotes, foreign examples, religious imagery, punishment traditions, and psychological commentary. The sequence moves from translation to parody to conceptual essay while retaining a common concern with pain transformed into erotic or imaginative meaning.

Shiga Yūji’s Regionality of Male Homosexuality is one of the issue’s most conventionally sociological pieces. It uses maps, tables, regional categories, and comparative discussion to examine geographical patterns of male same-sex behavior in Japan. Its statistical presentation contrasts with the surrounding fantasies and photographs but demonstrates the publication’s expansive definition of sexual research. Takarazuka Fumio’s How I Punish Him, illustrated by Shima Takashi, returns to narrative fantasy through a sustained account of female authority, restraint, humiliation, interrogation, and punishment. Ozawa Kazuo’s I Want to Become a Model, another selected confession, explores disguise, posing, exposure, embarrassment, and the vulnerability of becoming an object for an artist, photographer, or audience.

Furukawa Yūko’s Solitude is a long psychological confession involving isolation, illness, institutional treatment, bodily examination, and emotional alienation. Its clinical imagery and slower development give this portion of the issue a darker and more introspective tone. Mori Taichi’s Kelp and the Boy traces an unusual fixation to childhood and adolescent memories involving bathing, clothing, shame, tactile experience, and private imagination. Futamata Shizuko’s The Devil’s Game then begins a threatening narrative involving secrecy, domination, restraint, and danger; it continues well beyond the point at which the first 150 scanned pages end.

The second half of the issue includes additional illustrated fiction, prize-related writing, reflections on punishment imagery, historical or folkloric material, and critical discussion of modern masochistic art. These pieces make explicit the magazine’s view that punitive and erotic images may be studied aesthetically as well as consumed as fantasy. A long later narrative centered on a milk-bath feast develops ritual, bodily service, spectacle, and unequal power across an extended fictional environment. A feature examining the true face of the bondage model combines photographs and commentary on posing, restraint, physical strain, and the production of staged imagery, giving the magazine a reflexive opportunity to discuss how its own characteristic photographs are made.

Further late features examine the photographing and collecting of women’s underwear, imposed training and behavioral discipline, the relationship between aestheticism and cruelty, and another installment of Night-Light Island. A retrospective contribution looks back over a long engagement with the magazine’s central subjects, while an illustrated punishment feature leads into the closing departments. The issue does not end immediately after its last major story. Its final portion contains short reports, reader-oriented material, editorial commentary, submission notices, contributor information, publication announcements, reference listings, and advertisements. These departments reinforce the publication’s participatory identity by treating readers as possible witnesses, confessants, researchers, models, correspondents, and future contributors.

Across the complete issue, restraint appears as photographic technique, historical punishment, medical procedure, prison condition, domestic domination, artistic image, and private fantasy. Clothing functions as costume, fetish object, marker of gender, means of concealment, and instrument of control. Medical authority enters through casts, corsets, abortion, moxibustion, examination, and bodily treatment. Female dominance ranges from comic trampling and staged punishment to translated histories of cruelty and sustained fictional scenarios. Male vulnerability is examined through imprisonment, modeling, homosexuality, humiliation, cross-gender presentation, and masochistic self-analysis. Childhood memory and confession repeatedly provide narratives explaining the formation of adult desire.

The issue’s defining editorial gesture is its refusal to separate research, art, fantasy, and testimony. Historical clippings become evidence, photographs function as demonstrations, confessions become case histories, translations offer comparative scholarship, and fiction serves as a laboratory for unequal power and bodily sensation. Its listed visual opening, dense central sequence of articles, extended later narratives and criticism, and participatory back matter together form a coherent expanded issue organized around the documentation and imaginative staging of bodily control.
