Summary

The June 1977 issue deepens the magazine’s focus on couples and marital SM. Its principal theme is announced by the long opening roundtable, “A Wife Sinking into Secret Pleasure: The Wife’s Position and the Husband’s Position.” The article treats SM as a contested domestic relationship rather than a solitary fetish. Husbands and wives discuss secrecy, jealousy, pain, pleasure, role division, extramarital encounters, and the difficulty of making desire speakable inside marriage.

The roundtable is unusually extensive, occupying roughly the first quarter of the issue. Photographs show models tied on beds, restrained in compact positions, blindfolded, and handled during demonstrations. The conversation moves among theory, confession, teasing, and erotic performance. The wife’s voice is present, though often mediated by male interviewers and husbands, creating both a broader perspective and continuing uncertainty about who controls the narrative.

A repeated concern is whether SM exists apart from affection. Participants ask whether a husband’s dominant interest threatens intimacy, whether a wife’s masochistic pleasure can remain exclusive to marriage, and whether staged submission alters ordinary domestic authority. The discussion does not settle these questions, but it exposes the emotional labor hidden behind photographs of restraint.

The first section also contains explicit discussion of pregnancy, contraception, sexual compatibility, and the relationship between SM and conventional intercourse. This reflects the magazine’s tendency to place SM inside the entire sexual life of a couple rather than treating it as a separate theatrical episode.

A major feature titled “My Husband Rejoices in My Past” presents a husband who eroticizes his wife’s previous experiences. The story transforms jealousy into a deliberate erotic resource. Past relationships, confession, imagined rivals, and bodily display become instruments through which the husband intensifies his own arousal.

The issue then moves from discussion to environmental practice in “The Heat Was Fierce in the Furnace Room.” The photographic report documents an SM session in a room equipped with bars, beams, pulleys, furniture, and restraint apparatus. The setting resembles a private workshop. Rope, suspension points, a wooden horse, walls, and overhead supports allow the participants to create a wide range of positions.

The sequence is particularly important because it shows the material infrastructure of private SM. The room contains tools, ropes, frames, and surfaces designed or adapted for restraint. The photographs record floor bondage, upright restraint, suspension, inversion, wall ties, and apparatus-based positioning. This is a far cry from the fictional dungeon. It is a domestic or private room consciously constructed to make fantasy physically repeatable.

The three-part report “My First SM Photographs” follows an amateur photographer documenting bondage for the first time. It discusses cameras, lighting, posing, nervousness, and the difference between performing a scene and making it legible in photographs. The article treats the photographer as a participant whose choices shape the meaning of the scene.

Another long section, “A Man Who Remembers Mannequins,” connects fetishism, objectification, commercial display, and SM photography. The mannequin becomes an idealized silent body, suggesting the attraction of stillness, arrangement, and controllability. The article belongs to a recurring Sun & Moon concern with bodies transformed into objects or images.

The autobiographical “I Want to Bind a Woman with My Own Hands” gives voice to a reader who moves from magazine spectatorship toward imagined or actual participation. The progression is characteristic of the magazine’s readership narratives: seeing images produces recognition, recognition produces curiosity, and curiosity seeks practical experience.

The issue contains several extensive photo portfolios of amateur bondage. These include tight chest ties, behind-the-back restraints, school-uniform or sailor-style costumes, blindfolds, gags, floor positions, and crotch ropes. Pregnant women and married models again appear, emphasizing that the magazine’s imagined community includes people outside conventional glamour standards.

The later sections contain stories, reader reports, and serialized material on sexual shame, bodily fetishism, and female submission. The magazine also promotes its separate photographic publications and specialist “slave market,” suggesting an expanding commercial network around models, photographs, clubs, and equipment.

For readers of Kinbaku Today, the June issue is especially useful for its portrayal of SM as environment and process. The photographs show how rooms are prepared, how bodies are moved between positions, how couples discuss what they are doing, and how photography intervenes. Rope has become not only image or technique, but part of a small domestic institution.
