“‘It hurts—my arm’s coming out of its socket! It hurts! Help me!’
Keiko stood on tiptoe, her face twisted with fear and pain as she screamed.
‘How can you do such a thing? What has Keiko done? You took the money, and yet you’re still tormenting her. Isn’t that cruel?’
Ginko said this and brought the green bamboo cane down again on Keiko’s buttocks.
‘If it’s money you want, I’ll speak to my husband and pay you as much as you like. So please forgive Keiko now.’
Mrs. Shizuko pleaded with Ginko.
‘If you insist, I might stop Keiko’s punishment here—but there’s a condition. Listen.’
Ginko suddenly stopped running the green bamboo over Keiko’s body and continued:
