Summary

The May 1960 issue of Gahō Fūzoku Kitan is conceived as a heavily illustrated survey of erotic customs, bondage, sadomasochistic fantasy, historical punishment, and sensational fiction. Its structure gives visual material unusual prominence: a formal contents spread is followed by reproductions of Japanese and Western erotic art, a long sequence of staged rope photographs, original drawings of restraint and torture, and thematic collections of historical images. The issue’s editorial identity is less that of a conventional prose magazine than a pictorial compendium in which captions, short essays, drawings, photographs, and narrative articles form a continuous catalogue of transgressive spectacle.

The opening section juxtaposes ukiyo-e, European erotic imagery, and a color garden bondage photograph. A large photographic portfolio then explores floor ties, neck and torso harnesses, gags, chair and lattice restraint, outdoor post bondage, netting, paired restraint, suspension-like poses, and the use of wooden frames and household furnishings. The captions give these tableaux poetic or melodramatic titles such as “Naked Woman’s Sorrow and Joy,” “Neck Binding,” “The Anguish of Mahiru,” “Emotional Falling Flowers,” “Captive Butterfly,” and “Woman and the Prism of Rope.” The photographs repeatedly move between tatami interiors, bedrooms, garden settings, and improvised apparatus, presenting restraint as both domestic theater and visual taxonomy.

The middle portion turns from photography to drawn and reproduced imagery. Doi Keiko’s cruel-image album and Oda Toshimi’s illustrated punishment album imagine elaborate devices, cages, stocks, collars, suspension, whipping, and animal menace. These are followed by international collections devoted to grotesque customs, cruel women, women wielding whips, and bathing scenes. The historical material ranges across European prints, popular illustrations, Japanese bathhouse imagery, and scenes of punishment or sexual spectacle, treating disparate periods and cultures as parts of a single archive of abnormal custom.

The final third consists chiefly of prose narratives and translated or adapted sensational tales. “A Strange Experience” and “Night of the Beast” introduce contemporary erotic confession and psychological menace. Later stories feature a brothel proprietress, a beautiful woman associated with a windmill, a tattooed female spy, a harem massacre, confinement by the feared Mōmō gang, and a struggle for survival on Turtle Island. The issue closes with the illustrated period narrative “Obsessive Love,” followed by advertisements, ordering information, publication data, and notices. Across its full range, the issue binds together rope aesthetics, voyeurism, female cruelty, historical curiosities, criminal fantasy, and the visual transformation of suffering into collectible spectacle.
