Summary
The May 1960 issue of Gahō Fūzoku Kitan is conceived as a heavily illustrated survey of erotic customs, bondage, sadomasochistic fantasy, historical punishment, and sensational fiction. Its structure gives visual material unusual prominence: a formal contents spread is followed by reproductions of Japanese and Western erotic art, a long sequence of staged rope photographs, original drawings of restraint and torture, and thematic collections of historical images. The issue’s editorial identity is less that of a conventional prose magazine than a pictorial compendium in which captions, short essays, drawings, photographs, and narrative articles form a continuous catalogue of transgressive spectacle.

Highlights
- A formal two-page contents design organizes the issue into photographic gravure, erotic art, historical image collections, illustrated albums, and prose fiction. (PDF p. 4).
- The front matter juxtaposes ukiyo-e, European erotic imagery, modern photography, and drawings, establishing the issue’s cross-cultural pictorial approach. (PDF pp. 2–8).
- An extensive Japanese bondage portfolio surveys floor ties, gags, torso harnesses, garden restraint, furniture bondage, paired restraint, netting, and wooden-frame confinement. (PDF pp. 9–40).
- Doi Keiko’s cruel-image album imagines mechanized and theatrical restraint through stocks, collars, iron bands, cages, suspension, and animal-threat scenarios. (PDF pp. 41–44).
- Oda Toshimi’s illustrated album presents Westernized scenes of inverted suspension, corporal punishment, animal menace, and single-leg suspension. (PDF pp. 45–48).
- The later photographic section changes printing tone and develops religious sacrifice, couch restraint, kimono bondage, chair confinement, standing restraint, and paired female tableaux. (PDF pp. 49–64).
- The international pictorial collections assemble grotesque customs, historical cruelty, women wielding whips, and bathing imagery from European and Japanese sources. (PDF pp. 65–96).
- The prose section combines confession, sexual menace, crime, brothel and harem settings, espionage, captivity, and survival adventure. (PDF pp. 97–121).
- The closing illustrated story “Obsessive Love” adopts a period setting and manga-like sequential art before the publication notices and advertisements. (PDF pp. 122–128).
