Summary

This expanded January 1955 New Year issue of Kitan Club is organized as a large illustrated miscellany that moves from visual spectacle into psychological essays, confessional narratives, historical and ethnographic material, translated writing, and extended fiction. The opening third of the issue is dominated by drawings and photographs. These include historical punishment imagery, bondage and suspension scenes, women in restrictive garments, foreign erotic illustrations, staged domination photographs, fetish-oriented images of feet and clothing, and humorous or sensational pictorial features. The visual material repeatedly treats restraint, humiliation, costume, bodily display, inversion, trampling, and the theatrical staging of power as objects of curiosity as well as erotic interest.

The numbered literary section begins with Hayashi Yumio’s essay on the cultural basis of destructive instinct, which treats aggression and cruelty as social and psychological phenomena rather than merely private abnormalities. It is followed by a prize-winning autobiographical account of rope and foot fetishism, a long installment of the serialized juvenile-victim narrative The Altar of Sodomy, and a brief essay on abdominally focused sadistic pleasure. The center of the issue is occupied by several extended first-person narratives selected from the magazine’s confession and experience contest. These include a wife’s account of mutual marital inversion, a deliberately non-novelistic meditation on sexual fluids by Itō Seiu, a sequence of decadent or comic confessions, and narratives organized around secrecy, humiliation, bodily obsession, and sexual experimentation. The issue presents these materials in overlapping registers: some are offered as testimony, others as fiction or satire, and still others as examples for psychological interpretation.

Later sections broaden the magazine’s range. Tsukui Takeshi examines attachment to bodily deformity and atypical physical forms. A prize-winning contributor describes an obsession with bondage pictures and the circulation of rope imagery. Morimoto Aizō’s translation of Das Grausame Weib introduces European writing on cruel women and incorporates historical and foreign examples. Yamaguchi Kōichi’s Child Mountain Festival turns to regional custom and adolescent experience, while an interview with the artificial woman Matsudaira Taeko treats a public female impersonator or constructed feminine persona as a subject of curiosity. The posthumously published Young Woman’s Diary: The Marketplace of Evil offers an extended account of exploitation, poverty, and sexual danger from a young woman’s perspective. This is followed by a confession of an unfaithful wife and Mori Taichi’s lengthy recollection of fantasies from his years as an apprentice boy.

The magazine continues beyond PDF page 150. Mori’s apprentice narrative concludes on PDF page 152, after which Animal Lover’s Memoir occupies PDF pages 153–155 and discusses erotic fixation on animals in explicitly autobiographical and diagnostic terms. The true final page, PDF page 156, contains Two Moxibustion Anecdotes, an illustrated comic feature. Across all 156 viewer pages, the issue repeatedly combines purported documentary evidence with fantasy, confession with editorial framing, and foreign examples with Japanese historical or contemporary settings. Its dominant concerns are the classification of unusual desires, the relation between pain and erotic pleasure, the visual culture of bondage, and the magazine’s role as a forum where readers, artists, translators, and self-described participants could present marginal experiences as material for collective investigation.
