Summary

The June 1961 issue of Gaho Fuzoku Kitan is an image-heavy number built around erotic restraint, punishment fantasy, sadomasochistic spectacle, and the contrast between staged photography and illustrated fiction. Its opening color plates depict women subjected to rope, poles, whips, and other forms of torment, after which the formal contents page introduces a long gravure sequence. The photographs explore increasingly elaborate forms of female bondage: school-uniform restraint, compact floor ties, rope wound around the torso and limbs, binding to furniture and ladders, partial nudity, kimono bondage, rubber-strap restraint, and poses designed to emphasize discomfort, exposure, and the visual traces made by rope on the body.

A second visual strand consists of the feature Four Artists’ Sumptuous Punishment Pictures, which uses orange monochrome illustration to stage chains, sickle-like implements, candle or heat imagery, suspension, and mermaid-like water punishment. The foreign-oriented Rui Ahira Series follows with a woman carrying a whip and posing in black lingerie and stockings. Together these sections show the magazine treating bondage not simply as narrative subject matter but as a catalog of poses, implements, bodily surfaces, and visual techniques.

The prose section opens with Banba Takeo’s meditation on the erotic appeal of women’s feet, followed by Kurihashi Shingo’s The Devilish Writer’s Workroom. The issue then turns to longer sensational fiction and pseudo-documentary narratives. The Virgin Tana’s Five-Day Coming-of-Age Ceremony imagines a ritualized ordeal and is accompanied by punishment illustrations. Later, Revenge on Women by Kujira Tarō develops a melodramatic scenario of retaliatory punishment, while The Beautiful Girl Who Is Punished by Igaku Yume Tarō centers explicitly on disciplinary eroticism. The formal contents also lists a story about a cross-dressed man bound by a sadistic woman and the third male-punishment installment of Tales of Punishment from Around the Provinces, but those items fall within a gap in the surviving printed pagination.

The issue closes with the Reader Plaza, where readers comment on photographs, models, bondage compositions, and the magazine’s editorial choices, followed by several pages advertising and cataloging back issues and related publications. This participatory material is important to the magazine’s identity: readers evaluate rope technique, photographic staging, bodily presentation, and themes they want to see developed. Across the issue, restraint is presented simultaneously as erotic photography, artistic composition, punishment fantasy, fiction, and a shared vocabulary between editors and readers.
