Summary

The June 1960 issue of Fūzoku Kitan is organized around a special investigation of fetishism, framed by an unusually extensive opening sequence of erotic art and staged bondage photography. The issue’s editorial identity combines popular sexology, purported case history, crime reporting, confession, historical miscellany, fiction, and visual spectacle. Its central concern is the way desire becomes attached to specific body parts, garments, odors, bodily functions, disabilities, humiliation, pain, and ritualized restraint.

The front matter begins with Japanese erotic-print reproductions, a formal printed table of contents, imported Western imagery, and a long bondage portfolio. The photographs move between a garden, tatami rooms, screens, bedding, and enclosed domestic spaces. Rope is used for standing spread-eagle restraint, ankle suspension, compact floor ties, gagging, breast and torso harnesses, wrists bound behind the back, and poses involving trees, posts, furniture, and architectural supports. Short captions transform these tableaux into miniature narratives of sacrifice, captivity, sorrow, frenzy, and private punishment. A final page presents photographs submitted by a reader, reinforcing the magazine’s participatory subculture.

The main textual feature begins with Ōtachi Kinji’s overview of fetishism as sexual symbolism and substitution. Subsequent articles isolate particular forms: fixation on hair, arousal from excretion and urine, desire for women’s underwear, and attraction to men with physical disabilities. These essays mix terminology borrowed from psychiatry and sexology with anecdotes, newspaper cases, historical references, and sensational examples. The feature then expands into a lengthy crime history of attacks involving the cutting of women’s hair, breasts, buttocks, and clothing, followed by discussions of olfactory fetishism, enemas, clothespins, and the Korean ruler Yeonsangun as a figure of sexual cruelty.

The later issue broadens into historical and narrative material. It includes stories of bride capture, fox transformation, Meiji-period sexual curiosities, the erotic dimensions of punishment and public spectacle, a survey of sideshow abnormalities, a masochistic wife, voyeurism in public baths, male impotence advice, and a case involving an eighteen-year-old woman and compulsive sexuality. The final extended story, “Lesbos Day,” shifts toward female same-sex desire and social observation. Closing pages also contain short notices, advertisements, reader-oriented material, and publication information. Across the issue, Fūzoku Kitan presents sexuality as an archive of unusual objects, compulsions, crimes, memories, and theatricalized suffering.
